Yiddish Radio Lives!  A Musical Tribute to Ben Gailing at 120, Sunday, December 2, 2018, 1 PM , at Temple Beth Israel, 25 Harvard St. Waltham, MA

Join Hankus Netsky's Hebrew National Salvage for "Yiddish Radio Lives!," ushering in the Chanukah season with a program of Hassidic melodies, gems from the Yiddish theatre, klezmer dance tunes,Yiddish folksongs, and a special tribute to Boston's own Ben Gailing, the great Yiddish theatre actor and humorist whose Jewish radio show graced the local airwaves for sixty seven years, in celebration of the 120th anniversary of his birth. The program will feature Hankus Netsky on piano along with violinist Abigale Reisman, vocalists Miryem-Khaye Seigel and Henry Carrey, and other special guests, and will take place at 1 PM on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at Temple Beth Israel, 25 Harvard St. in Waltham, MA.  Hebrew National Salvage is known for its active role in rescuing extraordinary Jewish musical treasures that have been otherwise neglected, discarded, or overlooked and using them as a point of departure for compelling traditional and contemporary musical presentations. 

Hankus Netsky is co-chair of Contemporary Improvisation at New England Conservatory, “one of the most versatile (programs) in all of music education” (JazzEd Magazine). Netsky is also founder and director of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, musical director for Itzhak Perlman's Jewish music projects, including "Eternal Echoes" and "In the Fiddler's House," and was the recipient of a 2013 “Forward Fifty” award for his role in spearheading the resurgence of Eastern European Jewish music.  Amanda Miryem-Khaye Seigel is a an acclaimed Yiddish singer, songwriter and actor, and a prolific researcher in Yiddish culture. By day, she is a librarian in the Dorot Jewish Division, New York Public Library.  Originally from Atlanta, violinist Abigale Reisman is a co-founder of Ezekiel's Wheels, one of today’s most innovative and sought-after klezmer ensembles.  Vocalist Henry Carey is the son of well known Boston Yiddish Radio personality Leah Carrey (Leyke Post) and has performed with San Francisco's Lamplighters Musical Theatre and in various choral ensembles in the Boston area.  Ben Gailing was a Yiddish actor and writer, cantor and cantor emeritus of Temple Beth Abraham in Canton, and the host of The Ben Gailing "Freylekher Kabtsen"(Happy Pauper) radio show for 67 years (from 1932-1999).

Temple Beth Israel is located at 25 Harvard Street, Waltham, just opposite Hannaford Supermarket. Parking is available.  The synagogue is also accessible via commuter rail from North Station or the #70 Bus from Central Sq.
